Number Classification - Choosing The Odd Numeral

In these type of questions, certain numbers are given, out of which all except one share some common property and hence are alike. From the given numbers, one number is different and this number is odd among them and hence is chosen to be the answer.

Example 1 : Find the odd one out of these 51, 144, 64, 121, 256

(a) 51     (b) 144      (c) 64       (d) 121        (e) 256

Answer : (a)

Explanation : as we analyse the items in the group we see that

144 is square of 12,

64 is square of 8,

121 is square of 11,

256 is square of 16

But 51 is not a square of any number hence is the odd one in the group.

Example 2 : Find the odd one out of these  38, 57, 76, 95, 118.

(a) 38    (b)  76    (c)  118    (d) 57

Answer (c)

Explanation :  In the given numbers every term is multiple of 19, but only 118 is not multiple of 19.

19X2 = 38

19X3 = 57

19X4 = 76

19X5 = 95

19X6 = 114....soon

So, the odd one is 118.

Example 3 :  Identify the odd one out of these 2384, 1592, 3756, 4298, 3629

(a) 2384    (b) 1592    (c) 3756     (d) 4298     (e) 3629

Answer : (e)

Explanation :  When we analyse the items we see that

In 2384 we see that the last digit that is 4 is double the first digit 2

In 1592 we see that the last digit that is 2 is double the first digit 1

In 3756 we see that the last digit that is 6 is double the first digit 3

In 4298 we see that the last digit that is 8 is double the first digit 4

But in 3629 we see that the last digit that is 9 is not the double the first digit 3 Hence this number is the odd element.

Example 4 : Identify the odd one out of these  144, 196, 216 ,256, 289.

(a) 144   (b) 196   (c) 216   (d)  256   (e)  None of these

Answer : (c)

Explanation :  In the given terms every number is the square of number except 216.

12^{2} = 144

14^{2} = 196

16^{2} = 256

17^{2} = 289

But, 6^{3} = 216

So, the odd one is 216.

Example 5 : Identify the odd one out of these 7, 15, 31, 57

(a) 7    (b) 15     (c) 31      (d) 57

Answer : (d)

Explanation : when we analyse the items we see that

7 can be obtained from the formula 7=2^3-1

15 can be obtained from the formula 15=2^4-1

31 can be obtained from the formula 31 = 2^{5} - 1 = 32 - 1 = 31

But 57 can not be obtained from this formula or we can say can not be expressed as a power of 2. Hence,57 is the odd one in the group.

Example 6 : Identify the odd one out of these 1728, 2197, 1024, 2744, 3375

(a) 1728   (b)   2197    (c)   1024    (d)  2744

Answer :  (c)

Explanation : In the given terms, all are the cubes of numbers except 1024.

12^{3} = 1728

13^{3} = 2197

14^{3} = 2744

15^{3} = 3375

But 32^{2} = 1024

So, odd one is 1024.
